Known Issues

The following is a list of known issues with ShellEnhancer:

Known Issues With Version 3.0.0.91

The following is a list of known issues with ShellEnhancer version 3.0.0.91. (New issues will be added to the top of this list.)

  • When the option "Add menu items to the system/window menu of each window" is disabled, the system/window menu might keep schrinking. If you don't want to add those menu items, keep the setting enabled, but use the "Change order of extra system/window menu items" to remove all extra menu items.
  • Windows Vista: Due to the new UAC (User Account Control) in Windows Vista, almost nothing of ShellEnhancer will work on windows of applications that are running with higher privileges than the level of privilege at which ShellEnhancer itself is running.
For example: if you are logged in as a user without administrative priviliges, are running ShellEnhancer as that user and you start a program that requires administrative rights, the UAC will ask for the password of the administrator to run that program. All windows created by that program are running with administrative rights and ShellEnhancer (running without administrative rights) cannot do anything with these windows due to the UAC security measures of Windows Vista.
There is nothing that can be done about this. This is the new Windows Vista security, however, it only happens with elevated privileges which is uncommon with normal everyday Windows Vista usage, so this issue should not pop up that often.
  • For colorkeying: picking a color will not work on a transparent window or some windows that have been transparent before. This is a limitation in Windows.
  • 16-bit applications are not fully supported: no extra window/system menu items are added.
  • Transparency on large windows can cause a performance issue. Unfortunately this is an issue with the way Windows implements transparent windows and there is nothing I can do about this. (These issues will most probably be solved in ShellEnhancer for Windows Vista).
  • When you enable transparency on windows, you might get some redraw problems in some applications. This is not a bug with ShellEnhancer but it is an issue with these applications because they are not designed to be made transparent.

Known Issues With Version 2.0 Beta

The following is a list of known issues with ShellEnhancer version 2.0 beta. (New issues will be added to the top of this list.)

  • On Screen Display (= OSD) does not work on Win95.
  • 16-bit applications are not fully supported: no extra window/system menu items are added.
  • When you click on "Exit And Restore", not all windows are restored immediately. With some windows you have to activate that window or move your mouse over that window before it is restored. This is issue is related to the way hooks are implemented in Windows.
  • Hide desktop icons is not working on Windows 95: icons will disappear, but desktop is never redrawn (try to move a window and see)
  • Transparency on large windows can cause a performance issue. Unfortunately this is an issue with the way Windows implements transparent windows and there is nothing I can do about this. (These issues will most probably be solved in ShellEnhancer for Windows Longhorn).
  • When you enable transparency on windows, you might get some redraw problems in some applications. This is not a bug with ShellEnhancer but it is an issue with these applications because they are not designed to be made transparent.

Known Issues With Version 1.0 Beta

The following is a list of known issues with ShellEnhancer version 1.0 beta. These issues will be solved in the next release. New issues will be added to the top of this list.

  • The Minimize To Tray feature doesn't work with all applications. It is currently known to give problems with: PSPad, Lotus Notes, Visual Studio.
  • Bug in X-Window resize feature: you can resize a window to dimensions 0x0 and when you do there is no way to get that window back.
  • "3D Studio Max 6.0" crashes on startup when ShellEnhancer is running.
  • "Hide Folder 2.7" crashes when "Startup Tips" in "Hide Folder 2.7" are enabled.
  • In some cases, some applications don't show up in the Enhanced TaskSwitcher.
  • The Mosaic TaskSwitcher can sometimes crash on some systems.
  • When you have a hotkey-task to minimize a window to the system tray (the icons next to the clock of Windows) and you use this hotkey when the Windows taskbar has focus, ShellEnhancer will minimize the taskbar itself to the system tray, which will result in the taskbar disappearing.
  • Unchecking "Add menu items to the system/window menu of each window" doesn't seem to have any effect.
  • "Zoom Player" windows are not shown in Alt+Tab/Mosaic unless they are minimized.
  • When you assign a hotkey to the Enhanced TaskSwitcher, the hotkey doesn't work unless "Replace Windows Alt+Tab TaskSwitcher" is enabled.
  • When you press the Mosaic-Hotkey, the mosaic opens and sometimes immediately closes again.
  • When you activate the option "Replace Windows Alt+Tab TaskSwitcher" for the Mosaic-TaskSwitcher, pressing Alt+Tab twice fast will crash ShellEnhancer.
